Sigh....you have the life so many of us dream of. If we could just see the world through Charlie's eyes.
What a beautiful animal. He looks so graceful and elegant. It's hard to imagine him as a clumsy boy when you see him like this.
the contrast between the ground and sky is striking. these photos make me want to take a (long!) vacation from city living (pittsburgh, pa) and check out the country in your neck of the woods.

King of all he surveys
I seriously can not believe that anyone would have a problem with this young woman and her blog.
All kinds of wildlife are subjected to horrible things; they are trapped for fur or raised and slaughtered on fur farms, stocked in canned hunting facilities, stuffed in zoos, poached, etc. Thousands of bears in Asia live in tiny cages so their livers can be drained of bile. Charlie is just fine.
Sure, she's taking a risk by raising Charlie but anyone who has any kind of animal, domestic or not, takes a risk. That woman France who got a face plant transplant? She was mauled by a labrador retriever.
Charlie will wander off and join the wild when he is ready. As a wild coyote his chances of survival will be what they will be. For a coyote in that area, he'd probably be better off living with Shreve. In the meantime, many people people are getting to personal connection with a coyote that they might not have had without this blog.
So, if you you feel the need to gripe about Charlie, why don't you go help some wildlife that actually need it? Especially if you "have a degree".

I love the contrast between the blue sky and red earth. I don't know if I enjoy the subject of each photo (Charlie, of course) or the landscape (I can't wait to visit Wyoming someday!). Until then, I will live vicariously through the photos!

Your blog was just forwarded to me and I've gotten caught up in it. I live in Los Angeles, in a suburban, high-traffic setting, and one night when I went in to bring my 85-pound, mix-breed dog in for the night from my completely fenced property, I found her at the front gate running and playing with a dog that was on the outside of the fence. As I got closer and the dog trotted off, it became apparent that my dog had been playing with a coyote. Although there are lots of coyotes in L.A. and I see them frequently on hikes, it is rare to see them in the neighborhood. A few months later when I was just on a daytime walk in the neighborhood with my dog, we saw a coyote across the street walking toward us on the sidewalk, just as comfortable as could be. When she saw us she headed the other direction, but not in a hurry.

You and Charlie are afloat on a river of wonder and enchantment -- a rare commodity these days. Enjoy and cherish your time with the song dog. We viewers are witnesses to Charlie's evolving destiny.
I love the Iroquois thanksgiving address, "Greetings to the Natural World," particularly the part about thanking the animals:
"We gather our minds together to send greetings and thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us as people. We see them near our homes and in the deep forests. We are glad they are still here and we hope that it will always be so.
This may have been covered before but I am curious about Charlie's response to humans in general. Having a dayghter living in Montana I am well aware of the ranchers/farmers opinion of coyotes. Do you think Charlie could be endangered by acceptance of people or is he shy around those he does not know? We have always loved coyotes and occasionally have been amused by a couple who have watched our campsite when we have been in the back country of Yellostone although they are careful not to get too close.

I see an opportunity here. It's starting to seem obvious that he is choosing to stay in your world. Have you thought about starting an organization on his behalf to help rehabilitate coyotes and/or other wildlife for that matter? Charlie could be a symbol of how we as humans can coexist together with wildlife, that they are living, breathing, beautiful creatures who have feelings and a purpose in this world. Charlie is already a symbol of hope to so many of us who have happened upon your blog. No pressure, just wondering.
As Charlie gets older he just gets more and more elegant. This is a simple, but ohh so beautiful picture.

That whooshing sound you hear singing over the prairies and mountains is everyone catching their breath at this photo, Shreve. Wow.
He's a teenager! LOL! All arms and legs and on his way to being handsome but kinda stuck at being awkward! I envy your freedom. I adore my husband and our 4 children but this Utah girl (stuck on an army base in Texas) would love to hike through Wyoming with a Coyote.

Shreve - I just cannot believe what a gorgeous animal Charlie is. I've always been partial to coyotes - IMO they have it ALL OVER wolves in the gorgeousness department.

I got a master's degree in coyote reproduction, and I fell in love with the species. So amazingly intelligent with a wicked sense of humor, much like cats have. I helped hand rear some pups, and it is true: in just DAYS (like 4) they can change into a totally different creature; everything elongates_ nose, ears, paws. I am a little surprised that it took him so long to howl. The little pups I helped raise could make the most heart-breakingly cute little howl when they were still small enough to hold in one hand.
I always thought coyotes acted more like a cross between a cat and dog, than just like a dog. They like to strike a pose, just like cats do. And good lord! Those citters can leap like a cat too... they just land like dogs and sometimes hurt themselves.
Now, about the whole situation: I certainly do NOT advocate that people seek out wild animals to keep as pets. Most times those people have no idea what they are taking on, and it can end in tragedy for both people and animals. However, you have an ideal location to raise him, an expert readily available, and a pretty well informed attitude about the process you have undertaken. And it was either you or death for him. He is better off with you. You have made a friend for life.
Damn! I am so envious. I treasure the time I spent with the 'yotes. I was endlessly astounded by them. Oh, I have sooo many good stories about coyotes!

However, I do love to read your stories and imagine the wonders you see everyday, how blue the big Wyoming sky may be, what the air smells like, what Charlie smells like.....all just curiosities. 110 lbs at 12 months and growing.
I get the comments too from people about having such an animal but they are just soooo intelligent and stunning. I just wish she would stop eating everything. Shoes, leather head rest in truck etc.....Mines 94% wolf.
