Oh my. The blur in the photo makes him look like an apparition, only there for a moment before he disappears again ... I cannot get over what a stunning animal he is. Where does this image of the mangy ratty disheveled coyote come from? They are absolutely gorgeous.

however, I was visiting my parents last weekend & caught a glimpse of their central Illinois coyotes.
they were significantly less gorgeous, to put it charitably.
I think Charlie benefits greatly from good living & positive environment.
& plenty of Shreve snorgling.
Butchy: Oh, I'm sure Charlie's definitely displaying the benefits of a regular steady food source and (I'd assume) brushing or otherwise removal of dirt, etc. But they must still have the "gorgeous" inside them: I have a cat, for instance, brought in after living outside in an alley for some years, and he was pretty ugly at that time: skinny, filthy, covered in scars, dull dingy fur, etc. But healthful food and clean surroundings turned him into a movie star. I'm sure the love and positive energy thrown at him didn't hurt either, as it must certainly be at least part of the cause of Charlie's handsomeness. Snorgling don't hurt none either! :-)

Gorgeous. As is Charlie. I'm completely in love with him, and I want you to keep him forever, if he wants to stay.
I only have one question (and I've had it for a long time): when are we going to get the book? Those photos are simply stunning - I melted completely when I saw Charlie's expression yesterday - and I am always looking forward to the newest installation.

I gave myself the treat of reading the whole blog this morning and I highly recommend doing so. I read from the bottom up and the progression of pictures was so much more logical. Also, reading all the notes answered many of my questions.
Charlie has even invaded my dreams - I dreamt that my dog had stolen Charlie's cow-pie frisbee and they were playing tag as he chased her and the frisbee.

Sorry you've been having some negative comments lately, I don't usually read the comments so I don't know what they are but I saw your note about them a few days ago.
I hope you don't take them to heart, on the internet you find both the best and the worst of people because it has the ability to reach so many so easily. Please just post and know that there are so many of us that enjoy the pictures. It's usually the ones that are the most vocal that you hear from there are 10 times as many that just look and enjoy.

Your blog is the first place I visit after I turn on my computer in the morning, plus everyone I know has been sent a link. I'm a cat person who reads all the books about cats AND dogs (most lately Merle's Door -- yay Wyoming!) and a librarian. There's an empty space on library shelves waiting for your book.
Not all wild coyotes are "mangy, ratty & disheveled!" It depends on how well they are fed. We have a coyote that lives somewhere in our square mile unit. He comes in to get the neighborhood dogs to howl, then he comes trotting up the middle of our road with a very satisfied grin on his face. These are very intelligent animals. I am so pleased to see photos of Charlie every day. We too live in the 'Boon-docks' so to say and you have done a wonderful thing with Charlie. Maybe some day, he will find a mate and stay in the wild, but since coyotes are singular animals, he will probably be back to see his 'Mom' from time to time. Good job 'Mom.'
The expression on his face and in his eyes is so... complex, I guess is the word. So much there: intelligence, love, insight, etc. So unexpected to see it on an animal's face and in his eyes. Whodathunk it in such a wild and often maligned creature? Beautiful shot, Shreve, just beautiful.
I am in awe of Charlie's beauty, he takes my breath away. This amazing animal captures my heart more and more with each photo.
LOL - does Charlie ever express bewilderment or shyness for this camera you keep pointing at him? Or, since he's been with you 'as long as he can remember,' has he accepted it as an extension of you? :-)

I think commenters should say what they feel, as long as it is appropriate to the blog. Who can have too much praise? The people in this world today need more nice comments that say positive things. Shreve is doing a wonderful job showing us Charlie and his beauty and I want to praise her for it.

When I see pictures like this without something to compare perspective I think Charlie must be as big as a german shephard now. Then I see another where he is the size of the cat and realize he's just a little guy still. So gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us.

I talked about how cute and interesting Charlie was at work...and holy man do other people HATE coyote's!! They wouldn't even listen to me say anything positive. You must have some really tough times with other people.
But I would like to say that I think Charlie is great, and I can see "a tree in spite of the forest", if you get what I mean.
I just can't find the words......thank you. Each and every day is more amazing than the one before.....please give Charlie momma's kiss...the one that goes up on his forehead......

I agree with everyone else... any critter can be mangy and scrawny or handsome and healthy. Same as a pit bull can be loving and great with people and a beagle can be violent. All depends on the environment he or she is in.

Yesterday, I was walking my dog, and a coyote crossed the path in front of us. I think my dog wanted to play with it because he went after it, not aggressively, just curiously as if it were any other dog. I am sure if the coyote had allowed it, they would have played. I was doing some research on what to do if you come across a coyote (this one was about 10 feet from us, and didn't even look at us, just kept going) and I came across your blog and thought it was wonderful. I have a huge love for animals, especially dogs. They way you write and the pictures you post, makes me wish I had a charlie too. Thanks for sharing!!
Coyotes need more people in the world like you are. You get extra days of life for these good deeds and it doesn't matter if you want them or not.

Charlie is the epithiney of natures perfection,he takes my breath away ! all I can say is thank you for sharing him with us so we to can enjoy watching him grow through your eyes , he is now my screensaver forever. I check in on Charlie everyday to see what hes up to and love youre pictures you should be a wildlife photographer but you already have the best job in the world, Charlies mom !!
Yesterday I went out back to see what my little dog was barking at. Standing about 10 feet away was a magnificent coyote. it's funny that I thought to describe it to you!...it looked like...this. I too thought how people imagine them to be skinny, raggedy gray creatures.
We locked eyes and it was so gorgeous, so breathtaking that it took me a moment to remember that...I probably should call my little dog into the house! Though the coyote was standing, calmly looking at him, I wasn't sure if it was in amazement at such a funny, loud creature or if it was considering him as a snack! If only I had time to get my camera! Darnit!
