is this a "zoomed in" photo ? or close-up & did you have to run for your life after taking it .....? we have a few that hang out at one of our ponds, can never tell if they are gonna fly off or run up to you and try to peck your eyeballs out. strange animals
"Wait...do all geese have that bump on their face??"
No -- the geese with the distinctive knob at the base of the bill are Chinese Geese. These are specifically white Chinese Geese. There are also browns. They were domesticated from the Swan Goose, in Siberia. These geese in particular are known for being vocal and aggressive when threatened.
You really are a gifted photographer. Your eye is infallible in the way you set a picture up to be most interesting, rather it is three handsome geese perfectly centered or having Charlie just OFF center to provide the most visual delight. It's a gift and you definitely have it.
I am sorry if you have answered this before but if you don't mind answereing it again? Does Charlie act like a dog? You know, lick you, wag his tail fanatically? Is he your best friend? He looks so much like a Malmute I had once in the "running in snow" picture - which is now my screen savor.
Hey! Been lurking around the blog for about a month, but I had to comment on this picture. We used to have three white chinese geese (Fitzy, O'Neal, and Spud). We raised them from goslings and oh, were they ever funny. They'd follow us around the yard when we were outside, and when we went in, they'd climb up the front steps and honk at us through the screen door. Fun times.

Are these somebody's watch geese? My friend used to laugh at me when I claimed what good guard animals they are...and then she met some....
What does Charlie make of them?
What! Is that a coyote!
wow, Charlie has changed alot as he's gotten older. ;-)
Who needs a watch coyote / dog when you have geese !!!
Although they are a bit tough to herd, kind of like trying to herd cats !!!

Just started checking in on Charlie a week or so ago. Love it. Your photos are outstanding, and your text fun and interesting to follow.
I think I would be more afraid of a charging goose than a charging coyote. There is just something about them that makes me nervous.
Are they for Charlie? My neighbor here in Los Angeles had 2 of them which he had for "watch dogs". A coyote dispatched them one night. Silly man.

Thus ends the lecture for Ornithology 101...
Ha!
What kind of geese are those?
I live in the North.. all we get are Canada Geese :)
Tried to find the coyote on google earth near Dubois but had no luck. Love ya blog and photos.
Stumpinaclearcut.
Domestic Swan Goose (Anser cygnoides) or Chinese goose, I think.
I had guard geese once (Wiplock and Zeebo), they never chased me, but hated my husband. He was terrified of them.
They are great if you have the space and don't mind the noise, they are a lot more noisy than a howling dog. Ohh and they poo everywhere!
Geese scare me. Seriously!
Got chased by one as a small kid. It traumatized me.
What did Charlie think of the geese?

A farmer once told me that a goose will run 100 yards just so he can poop on your porch.
